What To Expect After The Funeral (From A Cemetery Point Of View)

The funeral process is a complex ritual with many steps. It can differ from one community to another, even if the communities belong to the same religion. For example, the funeral process between Roman Catholics and Eastern Orthodox Catholic communities can be slightly different. At Willowbrook Cemetery, we have seen the final rites of different communities and are willing to answer any questions you may have regarding the process. Here’s a look at what you may expect after the funeral:

Burial

After the funeral service is complete, most attendees will travel to the burial site or cemetery to witness the burial. It is common for close friends, family, and loved ones to go to the cemetery. Distant acquaintances and casual friends usually leave after the funeral service, allowing the loved ones to say their farewells in private. The priest may say a few words and hold a different burial ceremony at the cemetery grounds before the casket is lowered into the ground.

Reception

Once the burial is complete and the cemetery staff has started to cover the casket with earth, all attendees can leave. Most families will organize a small reception at their home or a specific venue for their closest relations and friends. This reception is invitation-only so guests should avoid attending unless the family desires their presence.

Memorial Service

Some people host a memorial service several days or weeks down the line. This event is usually for family members and friends who couldn’t make it to the funeral. It is a celebration of life and provides an opportunity to remember the most pleasant memories of the deceased.
