Is A Casket Required For Cremation?

While many people are now opting for cremation rather than a burial, not everyone is sure about whether a casket is required for cremation. The fact is that a casket is needed even if you choose cremation over burial as the last rites for a loved one that has passed.

Why Is A Casket Required?

Every crematorium will require that the deceased person be placed in an appropriate container. There are various reasons for this, such as:

  • The casket protects and shelters the mortal remains while the deceased is being transferred from the funeral home to the crematorium.
  • The casket also ensures that the staff at the funeral home work in a dignified manner and safely when handling the human remains.
  • Crematorium operators aren’t licensed to handle any human remains directly, which is why a casket is mandatory.

Selecting A Casket

A grieving family can find it very difficult to deal with modalities like choosing a casket. If a family opts for direct cremation, some funeral homes may offer a cardboard container as a complimentary service. This also becomes an environmentally-friendly choice, and there is no wastage of resources.

These containers are practical and quite dignified. Many families include sentimental items, letters, clothing, and blankets in the container as well. However, if you don’t find the cardboard container a good option, you can always opt for a casket of your choice. Most funeral homes offer various casket options, and you can choose from something very simple or elaborate, based on your requirements.
