How To Tell Someone A Loved One Has Died

If you have the responsibility of informing the rest of the family members about the death of a loved one, there are many different things you would need to keep in mind. How you break this news to the people you know is something that will stay with them for some time. This is why you need to be sensitive to their feelings when you are telling them that a loved one has died. Here are some pointers that can help you in this process:

  • Have this talk face to face with each of your family members and try to tell most of them in person.
  • Even when you are informing people who are in a different location like a different town, city, or country, try to make a video call, as that adds a personal touch.
  • If you have to inform any family members and friends, determine which of these people may be vulnerable, more susceptible to breaking down or find it challenging to deal with the news.
  • Call those people first and allocate additional time to talk with them. It is best to avoid indirect references to the death and speak very clearly about what has happened. This is something you should keep in view even when you are talking with very old people or young children.
  • When you are talking with someone face to face, look for a space that is quiet and calm and without any distractions or interruptions. This will help the person absorb the news in a better way and react in the way they want without worrying about being embarrassed while displaying their feelings.
