Why is Having a Place to Visit The Departed so Important?

Funeral practices have changed considerably over the years and people’s attitude towards the departed has changed as well. An increasing number of people choose cremation and scatter the ashes instead of burying them. While this is often the choice of the decedent or their family members, it is important to consider the benefits of having a final resting place. Here’s a look at why this is so important:

Place of Comfort

People take a long time to recover from grief and it can be difficult to let go of a loved one. During this grieving period, people want to be in places that remind them of the deceased loved one or where they can sense the loved one’s presence. The gravesite is the most visceral representation of the departed soul. People sometimes spend a few moments every month or every year by a loved one’s gravesite and draw comfort from it. This can be an important aspect of the healing process.

Remembering the Deceased

Life moves on and most people that have passed away eventually become an afterthought. Resting places like graves are often the most tangible evidence of their presence on this Earth. These can be of great historical importance and ensure the generations to follow can trace back their history. These places to visit can give people important insight into their personal family history. For example, a grandchild can visit the grave of a grandparent they never knew, understand their history, and feel connected to an important deceased member of their family.

People that have missed the funeral will have someplace to visit when they want to pay their respects as well. If you want to know about cemeteries or need to book a space, just give us at Willowbrook Cemetery a call on 203-222-8646 or contact us through our online form.
