Obituary of Lawrence P. Roberg

NORWALK, CONN Lawrence P. Roberg, a long-time resident of Norwalk, CT, passed away on Wednesday, August 24, 2022 at the age of 62 years, after complications of heart surgery, with his devoted wife of 22 years, Joanne Jeris by his bedside. Born in Stamford, CT, he was the oldest child of the late Fred and Betty Roberg. Larry graduated from Central Connecticut State University with a degree in Communications. In his early career, his distinctive voice made him perfect for radio and acting. Working on the air in Waterbury as "Larry Davis" for WATR and participating in numerous community theater productions in the Naugatuck area. After moving back to Fairfield County, Larry worked for News 12 Connecticut as an Assignment Editor for 32 years and was their longest tenured employee at the time of his passing. Larry was also a professional photographer. His work can be seen in the Tully Center in Stamford, CT, on book jackets, in books pages, magazine ads and countless other places. Founder of the Norwalk Backgammon Club, Larry was an avid backgammon player and collector; he competed in the intermediate division of the American Backgammon Tour, winning on occasion. Larry was proud of his membership in Mensa, serving as the Activities Chair of Mensa’s Southern Connecticut Chapter. He also appeared on stage with Curtain Call in Stamford, CT. Performing on stage was in his blood and he couldn't wait to get back to it when time permitted. A huge Mets fan (and baseball fan in general), Larry belonged to many groups devoted to the Mets and its history. A consummate parrothead, he loved listening to Jimmy Buffet music, attending his concerts and having the beach way of life. Larry collected beach sand from around the world; he always said about his collection “Now I had beach front property”. He acquired and wore over 40 hats ensuring that he was dressed appropriately for every occasion. He amassed a huge collection of playing cards, especially casino cards. He was happiest traveling with his wife across the US, the Mediterranean, the Caribbean, any Major League baseball stadium and any sandy beach where the two could share each other’s company. Larry and Joanne were well on their way to completing Larry’s goal of visiting every Major League Baseball Stadium in the country. Sadly, this goal will remain unfulfilled by Larry’s untimely passing A pet lover, Larry adored all of his dogs over the years and loved to call himself "Dog Father." An accomplished writer, his acerbic wit brought laughter to all, especially the limericks and haikus he wrote for his poetry club and The Saturday Evening Post. Known by those who loved him for his kindness, patience and intelligence, Larry impressed those around him with his wide range of interests and his zest for living. Larry is survived by his wife Joanne Jeris as well as his sister, Nancy Sciglimpaglia, his brother-in-law Steve Sciglimpaglia and two nephews, Alex and Andrew Sciglimpaglia of Norwalk, CT. A wake will be held on September 9th at Raymond Funeral Home, 5 East Wall St, Norwalk, CT.Funeral service will be held at Archangels Greek Orthodox Church in Stamford on Saturday, September 10, 2022, at 10:00am. Entombment will be held at Willowbrook Cemetery in Westport, CT. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Heart Association.
