WESTPORT, CONN
Peter Garat Garcia, age 80, of Westport, CT, passed peacefully on January 18, 2024, in Broomfield, CO, after succumbing to pneumonia.
Peter was born in San Francisco, CA, to Peter and Virgina Bramblett Garcia (who later married Arthur Long, who raised Peter, following his birth father’s death at age 7). From a young age, Peter was an avid traveler, growing up in the U.S. as well as Vietnam, Cambodia, and Peru, among other countries.
His loving wife of 45 years, Gloria Maria Jesus de la Conception Martinez Gonzalez Garcia, also passed peacefully, soon after her husband, on May 29, 2024, also in Broomfield, CO, following a head injury and long struggle with dementia. Gloria was born in the Canary Islands, Spain, to a loving Basque father, Jose Luis Martinez and Spanish mother, Juana Maria Rodriguez de Martinez Gonzalez. Gloria lived in Spain, Venezuela, Panama, Guatemala, Germany, and the U.S.
Before meeting Peter, Gloria was previously married to Bernd Hans Beranek Stahl Planton who passed away in 1977 and left two children, Klaus Patrick and Christian Ted. Peter and Gloria are survived by their four loving children and seven grandchildren: Klaus, his son Sebastian and daughter Marissa. Christian, his wife Marit and their daughter Isabella. Jen Garcia Allen, her husband Jefferson Allen and their daughters Flynn and Liv. And David Andrew, his wife Ashley and their daughter Arianna and son Jaxon.
Peter was a graduate of Oakland University, CA. Following college, he began a career at Xerox, the only corporation he ever worked for and where he retired as a marketing and customer service executive.
Peter loved his family, politics, travel, bridge, and never failed to read the New York Times cover to cover. He will be remembered for his incredible resilience, contagious optimism, sense of humor, and intellectual curiosity.
Gloria attended el Colegio Internacional de Maria Inmaculada in Panama City, which she spoke fondly and frequently about. She worked as a model and also for Xerox, in South America, before devoting her life to caring for her family.
Gloria loved her children, reading, the arts, painting, bridge, tennis, gardening, and her many plants. She will be remembered for being fiercely protective, loving, and loyal.
Both Peter and Gloria participated in New Neighbors and Graduates of Westport. Peter was a member of the Y’s Men of Westport/Weston. Gloria was a member of both the Spanish Group of Westport and the International Group.
The two left their beloved Westport almost ten years ago to be closer to their eldest son Klaus and grandchildren in the suburbs of Atlanta, GA and most recently moved to Broomfield, CO to be near their youngest son David, and his family.
Pease consider donating to the following charities of your choice in Peter and Gloria’s honor: Alzheimer’s of America and Tobacco Free Kids. Their combined interment will be private and will take place on July 5th, in Willowbrook Cemetery, Westport.
